I told you I’m super into scones at the moment! Especially savory ones.. But come on, who doesn’t love cheddar cheese and bacon! It’s something that is just too good to be true, and when placed into a flakey and adorably shaped scone, you cannot go wrong! I found some super thick and delicious local bacon from Langley at the grocery store and got totally inspired to make some delicious scones with the bacon! I wish I had access to my usual favorite Red Barn Smoked Maple Bacon, but unfortunately there is not yet a Red Barn in Vancouver.
I’ve seen soooo many different recipes for no-knead bread online and in magazines and have always wanted to try it. I decided to start with a simple recipe with few ingredients so that I can get the hang of the whole no-knead thing. I actually quite liked how non-kneady this bread is, you literally just let it sit and do its own thing. Now that’s my kinda bread! The result of this bread was much better than I anticipated! The crust on it was absolutely fabulous and the inside was very fluffy!
Throughout my blogging journey I have learned so much. Not only have I learned how to present my food so that it looks prettier, but I have also learned much more about food photography. Along with presentation, I have learned lots about cooking and baking! Practice makes perfect right?! One of the things I have really mastered lately is bread. My first attempt at making bread was back when I had a friend over for dinner and I totally thought it would be a good idea. Turned out that I didn’t knead the bread for nearly long enough and it was super tough and horrible!!
Jumbo sweet potatoes were on sale at the grocery store the other day, so naturally, Andrew and I bought not 1, but 2!! Now you may think these are just a couple of large sweet potatoes, but let me tell you – they are HUGE. One sweet potato made enough sweet potato fries for 2 nights, AND these sweet potato scones. Seriously, I’m talking biggest sweet potato you have ever seen!!! It’s hard to just use half a sweet potato and then leave the other half until I can think up a new recipe, so I will be sure to have a few sweet potato ideas thought up before I cut into the next jumbo beauty.
Lately I have been slightly obsessed with scones. There is something about that light and flakey texture that I can’t seem to get enough of! Especially when my scones are loaded with cheese!! I mean don’t get me wrong I do love a good sweet scone every now and then, but these savory and slightly spicy scones are da bomb!! Not to mention cheese makes everything taste better… It also helps that the people I’m living with love cheese too, and ensures I don’t eat all of the scones to myself.
My boyfriend made beer! How cool is that?! I didn’t actually know you could make beer until about a year ago. I must say it turned out quite well and could totally be sold in a liquor store as a hot commodity! I’ve seen a few recipes for beer bread and decided to try one for myself. Since we have an abundance of stout beer, this seemed to be the best opportunity!
Well you know one thing, your breath is going to smell REALLY great after eating this bread. Seriously though, I wouldn’t recommend making this for a first date and probably not even a second or a third. BUT regardless of how it makes your breath smell, it is really delicious comfort type food. You can’t go wrong with bread and cheese can you? These are two of the things I crave probably more than anything else. They are of course not quite the healthiest things to indulge in but that’s exactly what it is – an indulgence. Next time you’re having a major carb craving try this one out. It would go great as a side for pasta or chicken (or both)!
Ohhhh raincouver. Yep it’s raining again today. April showers bring may flowers though right? I could still do without the rain! Whenever it’s rainy and cold out all I want to eat is soup! And what better to go with soup than warm focaccia bread! This is a recipe given to my family by our neighbours, and let me tell ya – my momma makes it A LOT! Every time she makes it, it seems to get better and better. Yummy!
Soooo April fools day eh?! I had a couple people try to fool me with their tricks and only got fooled once! After just telling my mom that a radio gimmick was an April Fools Joke, I got a text from my boyfriend saying that a tanker truck outside our apartment in Vancouver was on fire and he was going out to help. Now I clearly trust him more than I trust the radio because I fully believed him, and told my mom about the fiasco… My mom just looked at me and said “you goof, it’s an April fools joke.” Almost had me Andrew, almost.. (thank god for mommies). Speaking of mommies – Look at this amazing bread!!!
I have 2 exams on Monday, both 10 minutes apart. Yes, I’m quite scared but these will be the last 2 exams of my university career!! As a study break I decided to make something delicious. I found this amazing recipe for cheddar and jalapeno biscuits on A Beautiful Mess thought they looked super easy and delicious!
I decided to go ahead and make them because hey, everyone needs a break from studying right!!! Then disaster hit… No not to my biscuits – they actually turned our perfectly if I do say so myself 🙂
